What does 2024 Met Gala dress code mean?

At last, the 2024 Met Gala dress code is revealed: ‘The Garden of Time’ will inspire the attire of celebrities and special guests ascending the iconic fashion staircase on May 6th in Manhattan. Named after J.G. Ballard’s 1962 short story, the dress code evokes a magical garden where flowers, once plucked, slow down the approach of a horde of graceless humanity toward the villa where a noble couple lives, immersed in art, music, beauty, and each other’s company.

As the theme of the Met’s Spring 2024 Costume Institute Benefit, also known as The Met Gala, was revealed, it sparked not only the blooming of flowers but also a proliferation of memes across the Internet and social media platforms. This highly anticipated evening, awaited by fashionistas worldwide even more eagerly than Christmas, has long been under the leadership of Anna Wintour, Chief Content Officer of Condé Nast and Global Editorial Director of Vogue, who has been a Trustee of The Met since 1999. Remember the legendary words of Miranda Priestly in The Devil Wears Prada, a character often rumoured to be inspired by Mrs. Wintour herself? Well, they ring truer than ever, echoing the humour that has been circulating the web: “Florals? In spring? Ground-breaking!”

As the primary fundraiser for The Costume Institute’s annual exhibits, publications, acquisitions, and operations, the Met Gala marks the opening of the department’s spring exhibition each year, including this year’s ‘Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion.’

The show will display approximately 250 exclusive objects from The Costume Institute’s collection, many of which had never been exhibited before. Retracing over 400 years of fashion history, the creations on display will include designer pieces from prestigious brands, visually united by nature-related iconography, serving as a metaphor for fashion’s fragility and transience.

As curator of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute, Andrew Bolton has emphasised that the ‘Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion’ exhibition will be divided into three main sections, namely Land, Sea, and Sky, offering a fashionable tribute to the natural world.

Last but not least, the co-hosts who joined Anna Wintour during the 2023 Met Ball – Penélope Cruz, Michaela Coel, Roger Federer, Dua Lipa – will be replaced this year by Zendaya, Jennifer Lopez, Bad Bunny, and Chris Hemsworth. In what extravagant and marvellous style will they embrace the 2024 Met Gala dress code? Which esteemed brands will redefine ‘The Garden of Time’ with exclusive custom creations? No one knows for certain. But one thing’s for sure: the new cast is absolutely mesmerising!
