Malika Dzhamaldaeva wins the “Create His-Story” Contest
Malika Dzhamaldaeva wins the “Create His-Story with Ceramic Figurines”, launched by Istituto Marangoni in partnership with Cappellini. The third edition of the international design contest was inspired by the story of Kaspar Urz, the porcelain figurines collector in Bruce Chatwin’s novel.
Aspiring designers were requested to design a decorative figurine in ceramic or porcelain, depicting real or imaginary characters, with a size limit for height of 15 cm.
Malika Dzhamaldaeva has been awarded with a scholarship offered by the Cappellini Group to participate in the October 2017 intake of Italian Product & Furniture Design Master’s Course held at The Milano School of Design, in addition to an exclusive internship opportunity at Cappellini’s.
Her project “Awaken the Giant” involves a figure resembling Michelangelo’s David, who floats inside a box in foetal position, which is partly inspired by refugees crammed into unseaworthy crafts, partly by John Lennon’s pose in Annie Leibovit’s iconic photograph appeared on the January 1981 issue of Rolling Stones and taken in the morning of December 8 1980, a few hours before his death.
Runner-up Bibimariyam Mussakhanova, who recently graduated at Istituto Marangoni Milano • The School of Design, presented her project “Sweet Neighbour”, inspired by the Sakkaros, the family made of sugar that melts in the rain in Isaac Asimov’s short story “Rain, Rain, Go Away”.
