Which looks would Karl have gone for at Met Gala 2023? Here are our faves

The fashion world was on high alert last night as celebrities from all corners of the entertainment world graced the red carpet at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City for the annual Met Gala. At the centre of all this Met Gala commotion was the Costume Institute’s new exhibition dedicated to Karl Lagerfeld’s extraordinary 65-year career, “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty,” paying tribute to the legendary designer who passed away in 2019.

Not only was the event a celebration of Lagerfeld’s legacy, but it also raised funds for the Costume Institute at the Met. The night kicked off with the parade of stars on the red carpet, which is always one of the event’s highlights. After all, the Met Gala has been dubbed the ‘Super Bowl of Fashion’ for a reason. Some of the most unforgettable looks of all time have graced the monumental steps of the MET. This year, the A-list celebrities were asked to “dress in honour of Karl,” meaning they were asked to interpret his inimitable style. And did they impress! The dress code gave us a parade of custom-made or archive dresses and outfits that paid homage to the master’s most iconic creations. The looks were truly unforgettable, from tweed to his unmistakable black and white uniform and even costumes that paid tribute to his iconic cat, Choupette.

Without further ado, while we wonder which looks Karl would have gone for, let’s take a look at our picks: The 5 most beloved looks from the Met Gala 2023:

  1. Rihanna and A$AP Rocky

Rihanna and A$AP Rocky made their fashionably late arrival at the 2023 Met Gala. As the evening’s final guests, the couple embraced the Karl Lagerfeld-dedicated dress code donning Haute Couture from Valentino and Gucci, respectively. Both looks featured clear references to the iconic style of Karl Lagerfeld, with A$AP’s slim leather tie and Rihanna’s cape coat adorned with Lagerfeld’s signature camellias.

  1. Anne Hathaway

Anne Hathaway made a stunning return to the red carpet in a radiantly elegant Atelier Versace gown embellished with Swarovski crystals and a Bulgari coin necklace. The dress paid tribute to Karl Lagerfeld’s work, featuring the typical codes of both Versace and Chanel, blending pearls, tweed, and camellias mixed with nurse pins, corsets, and slits. The result was a stunning conversation between two of the most iconic Fashion Houses of the ‘90s.

  1. Doja Cat

Doja Cat was the most anticipated guest of the night as she paid homage to Karl Lagerfeld’s beloved cat, Choupette, who was unable to attend. Doja Cat donned a cream-coloured Birman Tortie Oscar de la Renta gown, covered in a rain of bling-bling that blended from white to silver just like Choupette’s fur. Her feline-inspired look was complete with a feathered tail and whisker-perfect makeup, proving that she was the cat’s meow of the night. No doubt about it, Doja Cat is the true costume queen.

  1. Dua Lipa

Dua Lipa stunned the crowd with a jaw-dropping Tiffany & Co. diamond necklace featuring the iconic yellow Tiffany diamond, worn by Audrey Hepburn in “Breakfast at Tiffany’s.” She paired the necklace with a classic Chanel Couture gown from the 1992 fall-winter collection, creating a timeless, dazzling look.

  1. Gisele Bündchen

Gisele Bündchen made a long-awaited return to the red carpet in a vintage Chanel dress from the archives, looking stunning as ever. It has been several years since Bündchen’s last appearance at the Met Gala, but she proved she has not lost her touch. She wore an ethereal white silk tulle dress embroidered with vertical sequin stripes, initially debuting as the wedding gown in Karl Lagerfeld’s Spring 2007 Chanel Runway Show. The look was first worn on the catwalk by Freja Beha Erichsen, but Bündchen added her own twist when she modelled it in a Harper’s Bazaar Korea editorial back in 2007.

As the stars shone on the Met Gala’s red carpet, paying homage to the iconic Karl Lagerfeld, one of his famous quotes comes to mind: “Fashion is a game that has to be played seriously.” And play they did, with a parade of memorable outfits that paid tribute to the late fashion legend. From Rihanna and A$AP Rocky’s Lagerfeld-inspired looks to Doja Cat’s Choupette-inspired gown, the stars brought their A-game. As Lagerfeld once said, “I’m very much down to earth. Just not this earth,” and last night’s fashion extravaganza was proof that he will forever be remembered for his out-of-this-world creativity and vision.
