How an Italian TV series made ‘90s streetwear cool again

Through the story of the band 883, the new Sky Original series“Hanno ucciso l’Uomo Ragno” revives ‘90s Italian small-town teenage culture

Sometimes, “Small-town life” can be cool, as vividly demonstrated in the early ‘90s by the Italian duo 883. Named after a famous Harley-Davidson motorcycle, they captured an entire generation with lyrics that resonated with their lives—not only through catchy pop music but also with a highly relatable '90s streetwear style.

Recently, Sky Original brought the story of Max Pezzali and Mauro Repetto, two artists from Pavia, a town south of Milan, to life with the acclaimed 8-episode TV series “Hanno Ucciso L’Uomo Ragno – La leggendaria storia degli 883.” Debuting on Sky and streaming on NOW on 11 October 2024, this coming-of-age series, starring Elia Nuzzolo and Matteo Oscar Giuggioli, has already reached cult status, smashing viewership records with an average of 1.3 million viewers weekly. These figures make it the most-watched debut of a Sky Original series on Sky in the past eight years.

But why does this series have such an impact today? Its appeal goes beyond the compelling friendship at its core. It captures the lyrics of the band’s songs, which reflect both the desire for change and the fear of failure experienced by young Italians who grew up away from the major cities in the ‘90s, and it also revives the stylish, authentic and unpretentious aspects of small-town Italian streetwear that defined the era.

In a time dominated by ‘90s nostalgia, influencing contemporary trends, the “Hanno Ucciso L’Uomo Ragno” series thrives on its genuine portrayal of the distinctive provincial style that defined the decade, leaving a lasting mark on the fashion landscape in Italy and globally.

Considering this fashion revival, here are some essential pieces that became staples in every teenager’s wardrobe during the ‘90s and are now making a comeback—a nostalgic journey down memory lane for parents and a fresh discovery for today’s Gen Z.

Denim Jackets and Levi’s 501: Cool Vintage Buzzwords

When we say Levi’s, we’re not just talking about a single item in the wardrobe—it’s a complete head-to-toe look. In the ‘90s, Levi’s 501 jeans were essential to any outfit, worn by teens for various occasions, from the trendiest evening parties to everyday school wear. They were often paired with a relaxed-fit denim jacket, ideally in the same wash as the jeans, making this combination the ultimate all-rounder. Today, this style remains highly sought after by Gen Z at vintage flea markets.

Ray-Ban Wayfarer: The Iconic Sunglasses Loved by All

Originally designed in 1952, the Ray-Ban Wayfarer returned to the spotlight in the early ‘90s, becoming a firm favourite among both celebrities and the youth. Sunglasses were a must-have fashion statement, even on dreary days, and Ray-Ban describes the Wayfarer as “the most recognisable style in the history of sunglasses.”

Oversized Band T-Shirts: Rock-Inspired Fashion Staples

Teen wardrobes were filled with three-quarter-sleeve solid-colour T-shirts, the perfect match for 501 jeans. However, the true fashion highlights were those adorned with prints of rock bands and music idols, which exemplified how a simple, no-frills piece of clothing could become an enduring fashion statement.

Diadora Sneakers: An Athletic Twist on Everyday Style

In the ‘90s, sneakers became almost an extension of the body. Teens wore them all day—sometimes even to bed. Trainers could be paired with both casual and smart outfits, making them versatile for any occasion. Diadora’s low-soled white sneakers, worn by renowned athletes, epitomised this timeless style, offering an urban edge with a retro twist.

Multi-Coloured Backpacks: The Urban Essentials

Who could forget the brightly coloured backpacks that seemed to be everywhere? Worn even when empty and often mismatched with outfits, these backpacks symbolised a carefree attitude—a hallmark of the 1990s fashion ethos. The standout brands of that era were Seven and Invicta, whose bags continue to make appearances in vintage markets, reminding us of a time when bold colours and functionality ruled.

Casio Watches: The Timepiece That Defined a Generation

The Casio watch was an essential accessory for young people, symbolising an entire generation. From the mini golden watch to the steel-coloured round designs, the futuristic aesthetic captivated the imagination of gaming enthusiasts. Notably, the Baby-G style stood out with its playful colours and bold design, making it more than just a timepiece; it was a true fashion statement loved by many.

What can we take away from this? After this nostalgic journey through the iconic pieces of ‘90s Italian streetwear from small-town Italy, one thing is clear: trends don’t need to be extravagant to make an impact. They capture the essence of who we are—often outsiders, even underdogs, yet individuals with ambition and a drive to succeed. Vibrant colours, sneakers, band T-shirts, and Levi’s jeans defined a generation raised in small towns in 1990s Italy, balancing dreams with fears—and these elements remain relevant today. Don’t just take our word for it—experience it for yourself.
