name and surname: Giulio Masciocchi course: Product Design · three-year course · undergraduate programme school: Milano School of Design country: Italy Giulio Masciocchi is a young designer from Como, Italian flagship city in the design furniture industry. After his high-school diploma as Industrial Technical expert, he moved to the UK and worked as a textile designer for the London’s leading print design studio Westcott-Design Ltd. Back to Italy, he graduated cum laude in Product Design from Istituto Marangoni Milano School of Design. Some of his best professional achievements include collaborations with Versace and Versace home, for whom he has designed accessories and furniture, and also with the avant-garde eyewear brand Glassing, thanks to which he stepped into the limelight at the age of 23 designing the "un1co" sunglasses. Giulio Masciocchi’s curricular project has concerned the design of an outdoor chair named “Xylem”. His work was exhibited at ‘Salone Satellite’ during the Salone del Mobile 2014 trade show in Milano, sought after showcase for under 35 emerging designers. With an approach to the design of everyday objects he describes as “comprehensive,” Giulio Masciocchi’s project fosters the functional use of materials, often conceived in an eco-friendly framework. Xylem is entirely made of wood; the clever bending of the latter, ensures maximum freedom of movement and that functional design touch the market demand for furnishing accessories industry currently craves for. From open to closed, Xylem takes different “conceptual design” shapes: this is how Giulio Masciocchi conveys his interpretation of “the will to think, talk, act,” in one word: Freedom.
