encounter and interview with tom dixon
An autumn day in West London. The students of the Master in Fashion Communication, Promotion and Media London have had the great opportunity to meet and spend an afternoon with world-famous designer Tom Dixon.
Tom Dixon welcomed the class to his old Victorian building in Ladbroke Grove, where he has not only the studio and the shop, but also a restaurant, the Dock Kitchen.
The encounter was part of the course “Fashion Journalism & Criticism” 2015: the students interviewed Dixon for a real professional experience as journalists. In class they first studied the profile and work of the British designer, preparing the questions and flow for the one-on-17 interview!
How to manage a real Q&A activity, from research to the final article.
With a music background, self-taught, Tom Dixon is one of the most influential and famous designers of our contemporary times, selling worldwide its eponymous brand in more than 65 countries, from New York to Taiwan, Bogotá, Tokyo and Istanbul, and outfitting clubs, hotels and restaurants from Paris to Hong Kong.
His universe is made of gold, metal, a lot of copper, Britain’s heritage with a glazed touch, rough material with a glamorous twist, upholstery wingback chairs, clusters of pendants and balls, but also small accessories such as tea-pots, a 4 candle-stick holder and colorful brick-notebooks.
His mind moves very speedily and his ingenious folly makes him interested in many fields, from science and materials to marketing and packaging. His red brick Wharf Building headquarters, right on the Grand Union Canal, once the home of Richard Branson’s Virgin Records, are a collection of his passions, a mirror of this raw and wide spirit. His S-Chair, made of cane in an S shape, designed for Cappellini in 1989, is part of the permanent collection of MoMA in New York.
Disco and motorbike. That’s how it all started. «In the late 70s I was a musician, I used to play a bit of bass guitar, but it was more disco than punk, and then I had an accident with my motorbike, an old Moto Guzzi… I broke my arm… I couldn’t play for a while, so I started making things and that became my job!». Tall and thin, with a strong British accent and attitude, he speaks very fast, rich in jokes and irony.
«We spent a couple of fun and enjoyable hours, with an endless flow of conversation, touring the world of creativity, design and business. Balancing the back and forth of the inputs for Tom, in real time like in a real professional interview. Each student had a question for him, in a progressive order, sense and rhythm. I was very proud of their attitude, attention and curiosity. It was very nice and rewarding to hear Tom saying, when we were almost at the end, that he was sorry we had finished! That means he was amused and intrigued by the group, and the ability of a journalist is also this task. A success for our class practice session!»- says Caterina Lunghi, journalist and Tutor of the program, who proposed the meeting led the interview-trip and articles.
