After winning the Best Collection Award at the end-of-the-year Fashion Show at the Shanghai Fashion Week, Diana Villalobos Barrera, a Mexican graduating student in Fashion Design at Istituto Marangoni Shanghai Fashion Training Centre, won the 2016 International Designer of the Year Award. Diana created unique and innovative womenswear designs, expression of her talent and personal influences, as well as of the craftsmanship and skills developed at Istituto Marangoni. Her collection's theme, The Beast, refers to a network of freight trains used by US-bound Mexican migrants. The trains represent a dream of hope for the unfortunate Mexicans who undertake the perilous journey; but also a nightmare, for the life-threatening danger inherent in travelling clandestinely atop trains. A dramatic and topical issue in her country, skilfully approached with the passion for her culture and its colours that shapes her distinctive style.
