1990’s fashion: the resurgence
1990’s fashion: the resurgence
While the decade can be credited with bring us some slinky slip dresses and kitten heels, there's also a whole host of trends from that decade that are best forgotten. Let’s take a look back at the pieces we used to be so proud to own but can't imagine ever wearing again, and the looks we'll happily revisit.
Tiny bags
From mini back packs to the infamous bum bag, which has been rechristened as the waist pack, but whose new name is fooling no one. The bum bag was a huge trend in the 90’s for fashionistas and tourists alike; wear it right and you were A-list, wear it wrong and you might have been asked to leave the party. Iconic Brit fashion house Burberry is flying the flag for the millennial take on this 90’s icon, with their traditional check revisited in a contemporary stripe,
Combat trousers and boob tubes
Who didn’t own a pair of combat trousers in the 90’s? Just look to All Saints for the full ensemble: lace up boots with a wooden wedge heel, combats and a silk handkerchief top or a boob tube (known to our American friends as a tube top). It was a sassy trend none of us could do without. The trousers have also seen a resurgence lately, but have evolved. Spotted on some big-name fashion influencers like Bella Hadid, whose penchant for 90’s fashion is undeniable, their return is indisputable. From , plenty of brands are putting their own spin on this style for 2022.
Shell suits
While sports wear as leisure wear seems to be here to stay, there is one trend from the 90’s that might make you cringe when looking back at old photos: the shell suit. Some of the top sportswear brands such as Nike and Adidas made some colourful, bold versions, but the way we wore them back then, paired with a matching scrunchie, is not something any of us will be looking to revive.
