Digital Fashion Challenge

In partnership with HUGO BOSS and ADOBE

Istituto Marangoni Firenze launches an unique project in collaboration with HUGO BOSS and ADOBE, offering students the chance to win an internship with HUGO BOSS’ 3D Design Team. This innovative initiative merges student creativity with industry expertise, using the ADOBE's Substance 3D technology to redefine the future of digital fashion.

What are the essential skills for the future of fashion designers? At Istituto Marangoni Firenze, students are discovering them through hands-on experience thanks to an exclusive collaboration with HUGO BOSS and ADOBE.

The Digital Fashion Challenge tasked Bachelor's and Master’s Fashion Design students with creating two menswear looks for the first fully digital collection of the renowned brand.
Guided by professional expertise, students explored advanced digital techniques starting from ADOBE’s Substance 3D.

This unique project culminated in a final presentation at the company’s Headquarters in Mendrisio, Switzerland, where the best student was awarded with a prestigious six-month INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY within the HUGO BOSS' 3D Design Team.

FIRENZE FASHION DESIGN STUDENTS

Fashion Design students, were tasked with creating two menswear looks for Hugo Boss’s first fully digital collection, using CLO3D and Adobe Substance 3D, to gain practical experience in digital design

HUGO BOSS 3D DESIGN TEAM

The brand partnered with the School to provide students with insights into professional fashion practices, aligning their creativity with real-world needs while highlighting the industry commitment to digital innovation

ADOBE SUBSTANCE 3D EXPERTS

The team introduced Substance 3D suite, allowing students to create hyper-realistic textures and patterns. This marks the first time it has been used in an Italian educational context, showcasing the technology its role in the future of fashion design

The project kicked off with a dynamic two-day workshop held at Istituto Marangoni Firenze led by the experts:

  • Cristina Souto Caviglia · 3D Design Team Leader @HUGO BOSS and Alumna of Istituto Marangoni Firenze
  • Emily Bisset · 3D Technical Artist @ADOBE

The workshop offered a comprehensive training and the students were introduced to the innovative tools they would use, ADOBE Substance 3D and CLO3D, with an intensive session about both technical skills and creative insights, preparing them to push the limits of digital fashion design.

EMILY BISSET from ADOBE
"Students are going to be using Substance 3D Sampler for material creation, where they may capture an image or a swatch and then turn it into a 3D material.
They’ll then take it into Substance 3D Painter to add all the finer details—bringing in their captured material, adding stitching, perhaps some imperfections, and then potentially taking it into Substance 3D Stager for some lovely renders and beauty shots. It should produce great results.
We’d like them to start with the basics of Substance 3D Sampler, Substance 3D Painter, and Stager. If they can grasp the fundamentals, that would be amazing, considering we’re only teaching for two days—it’s a lot of information to take in."

The Digital Fashion Challenge provided Fashion Design students with an opportunity to revolutionize menswear design by embracing cutting-edge digital tools. By utilizing Adobe Substance 3D, they gained hands-on experience with hyper-realistic texture creation, stitching, and material customization. This approach not only expanded their creative possibilities but also removed the limitations of working with physical fabrics, offering a new dimension to their design process.

By creating fully digital garments, students showcased their ability to merge traditional tailoring with modern innovation. Precise material detailing and realistic textures reimagined Hugo Boss's craftsmanship in a virtual format. This transformative learning journey also highlighted how integrating 3D design within the creative pipeline can streamline production, reduce waste, and meet industry’s standard. With guidance from leading professionals, students gained invaluable practice-based experience, equipping them with the essential skills and knowledge to excel in the evolving fashion landscape.

JACOPO BATTISTI
· TUTOR @ISTITUTO MARANGONI
“The Substance 3D toolset allows students to create a very wide range of fabrics, textures, and other assets. Integrating 3D within the creative pipeline can cut time and reduce waste, which is today the golden standard within the industry.”

The challenge ended at HUGO BOSS’ Headquarters in Mendrisio, Switzerland, where students presented their menswear collections to a panel of industry professionals. An initiative that highlighted the transformative impact of digital tools for the next generation of designers and boosted students' preparation for working in the fashion system.

THE WINNER

Each look showcased the creative journey from concept to execution using advanced digital techniques and after evaluating the collections, the team awarded Mayla El Mouallem (Fashion Design & Accessories Master's Degree student) with a prestigious six-month internship within the HUGO BOSS' 3D Design Team, set to begin in October 2024.

The Digital Fashion Challenge was a transformative experience for all participants, highlighting the importance of digital innovation in the future of fashion. This collaboration with Hugo Boss and Adobe reaffirms Istituto Marangoni's commitment to preparing its students for the challenges of the modern design industry by equipping them with the tools, skills, and connections necessary for success in their careers.
