Re:mixing the city (might delete later) is a digital exhibition created by an interdisciplinary team of Arts Curating and Multimedia Arts students from Istituto Marangoni Firenze, guided by visual artist and I’M Mentor Andy Picci.
The project shows the physical world through the digital lenses of Augmented Reality and explores seven Florence’s iconic landmarks, including Palazzo Vecchio, Chiesa di Orsanmichele and Giardino di Boboli, chosen for their relationship with the history of fashion.
The students have been guided by I’M Mentor Andy Picci, digital artist who has challenged the methods of creating, communicating, and exhibiting digital art. They merged antique facades and landscapes with digital creations, which viewers can experience either through the map on the digital platform I’M Firenze Digest or via Instagram, directly on the spot.
Not only is each location chosen for its importance in the city’s landscape and history but also because they were all venues for major fashion events, strengthening the bond between fashion, art and architecture that defines contemporary Florence.
Augmented Reality strengthens the students’ work, establishing the interaction between virtual environments and the physical world and allowing both to merge through smart devices. This contrast between the landscapes of Florence, the viewer’s choices and the artists’ imagination generates a new opportunity for empathy and discovery.
As explained, there are two complementary ways to experience the project: either using the I’M Firenze Digest platform as an exhibition guide, catalogue, and document or exploring Florence through the Instagram lenses to evoke the digital sculptures in the seven locations across the city.
