Who are the real Sleeping Beauties reawakening fashion at Met Gala 2024?

This year’s Met Gala, famed for its secret guest list and fundraising prowess for the Metropolitan Museum’s Costume Institute, has embraced a theme that is more transparent than its guest list, exploring how technology can breathe new life into garments that are too old and fragile to be worn again.

Inspired by the 1962 novel “The Garden of Time” by J. G. Ballard, the dress code at Met Gala 2024 was a literary fitting choice, in tandem with the exhibit’s emphasis on fashion’s past and future.

In this context, the Met Gala 2024 green carpet was fuelled with florals to cybernetic outfits graced by co-chairs like Zendaya, Jennifer Lopez, Chris Hemsworth, and Bad Bunny alongside Anna Wintour and other famous faces.

Definitely, the first few celebrity couples made a good impression, including Christian Cowan with Sam Smith and Måneskin’s Damiano David with Dove Cameron. But who stole the show with their spot-on ensembles? And which Met Gala 2024 outfits are driving the Internet crazy? Let’s uncover the best, worst, weirdest, and most on-theme looks.

Zendaya’s Head-Turning Maison Margiela Gown

Undoubtedly, Zendaya was the undisputed queen of the Met Gala 2024. As one of the co-chairs of the evening, the actress first enchanted us with her extraordinary look by John Galliano for Maison Margiela Artisanal. She effortlessly embodied a modern-day Venus with a hint of 1920s glamour and just the right amount of drama. The look featured a hand-painted duchesse satin corset, electric blue organza cut on the bias, and a billowing bow cinching her waist with almost sculptural precision – all bearing the hallmark of John Galliano’s guaranteed success. Not satisfied with just one show-stopping look, she amazed us once again with a second outfit, a vintage Galliano-era Givenchy couture gown featuring a sumptuous antique bustier and a maxi skirt. It was actually made the year she was born. To top it all off, she adorned herself with a headpiece from the 2007 Philip Treacy for Alexander McQueen collaboration, which resembled a bouquet of roses.

J-Lo’s Met Gala 2024 Look: a Haute Couture Schiaparelli Gown with a Few Flaws

Jennifer Lopez, who joined Zendaya as one of the night’s five co-chairs, impressed us with her outfit, although a few details could have been better. J-Lo, on her 14th appearance at the Met Ball, opted for a haute couture Schiaparelli gown featuring a gracefully trailing train, sculptural bodice, and plunging neckline, all adorned with silver sequins that created a see-through effect. A diamond-studded necklace complemented her unmistakable stage presence, but the slightly messy chignon with its few rebellious strands out of place, along with the ‘wedding-like’ satin clutch, clashed with the overall look.

Tayla’s Perfect Ensemble vs. Rita Ora’s Risky Choice

Tayla truly aimed for perfection by wearing the “Sand of Time” dress by Olivier Rousteing for Balmain. She accessorised herself with delicate jewellery, sand paintings on her shoulders and arms, and the absolutely stunning hourglass clutch by Balmain.

RitaOra’s outfit didn’t quite achieve the same level of finesse. Designed by Francesco Risso for Marni, her look could only be described as the “nakedest naked dress of all time”. It was crafted from multi-coloured strings of beads dating back to the first and second century B.C. that cascaded down a sheer bodysuit. Paired with a wet mullet hairstyle and shimmery blue eyeshadow, it was certainly a bold nod to ancient times. While undeniably a homage, it may have been a bit too overt, leaving little to the imagination.

What Did Kim K Wear to the Met Gala 2024? A Fashion Statement with a Granny Chic Twist

Kim Kardashian wore a stunning creation by John Galliano for Maison Margiela Artisanal. The armour-esque bustier top was adorned with metallic floral motifs, making a bold statement. However, some might argue that the waist was cinched a bit too tightly – oh, Kim! Yet, she surprised with an unexpected touch by throwing on a grey bolero cardigan over the metallic ensemble, adding a hint of ‘granny chic.’ While it may not have been necessary, it undeniably worked.

The Sleeping Beauties Reawakening Fashion: Lana Del Rey’s Gothic Fairy-tale Ode to the Alexander McQueen Archive

Fresh from Coachella, Lana Del Rey graced the Met Gala 2024 with a custom Alexander McQueen dress by the house’s new creative director, Sean McGirr, inspired by a look from the late designer’s fall-winter 2006 ready-to-wear collection, The Widows of Cullodennod. Her ensemble was a highly conceptual corseted dress made from silk, double tulle, and georgette, all intricately embroidered with hawthorn branches, resembling the Tree of Life. To add a final touch of drama, McGirr fashioned a special headpiece using natural hawthorn branches draped with a veil of tulle, complemented by a bronze metal Drop bag with a few clock details. Perfectly in line with the dress code and with a delightful touch of Gothcore, the outfit brought together all the Sleeping Beauties and Maleficents of the world.

Another Remarkable Nod to Fashion Archives with Nicole Kidman’s Tribute to Cristóbal Balenciaga’s Flamenco Silhouettes

Rounding off our line-up of female celebrities at the Met Gala 2024 is Nicole Kidman. She exuded timeless elegance in a Balenciaga gown designed by creative director Demna as a nod to the original Spanish couturier’s flamenco-inspired silhouette. With her double silk bustier and flared skirt layered over frayed black silk organza mimicking feathers, the Oscar-winning star paid homage to flamenco dancers and Balenciaga’s Spanish heritage. While not the most cost-effective or sustainable choice, requiring 800 hours of embroidery for the 3,000 organza feathers and an additional 400 hours for the white bodice and silk skirt pieces, it was undeniably a stunning reinterpretation of one of Cristóbal Balenciaga’s most iconic pieces.

Bad Bunny: The Best-Dressed Man at the Met Gala 2024

Let’s not forget about the male celebrities who graced the most vibrant fashion night of the year. First up is the co-chair, Bad Bunny, who dazzled in a Maison Margiela Artisanal by John Galliano outfit that exuded a fairy-tale flair. He wore a black satin corset and a navy barathea wool smoking jacket with an inside-out, avant-garde appearance, paired with a gigantic beret, tiny sunglasses and Christian Louboutin for Maison Margiela Tabi boots. He looked like one of the three musketeers, with a touch of avant-garde glamour, which was quite fitting for the occasion.

Chris Hemsworth’s Tom Ford Suit as The Sexiest Outfit at Met Gala 2024

Finally, it’s time to shift our focus to Chris Hemsworth, one of the co-chairs of the 2024 Met Gala, donning a cream Tom Ford three-piece suit – elegant, exceptionally classy, with a hint of old-money style. It was truly on point, although opting out of wearing gold jewellery like trapper singers might have been a wiser choice.

When Loewe Made Jonathan Bailey Look Like the Fairy-tale Prince We Deserve

Wrapping up, we have Jonathan Bailey in his ironic yet elegant custom Loewe by Jonathan Anderson: a double-breasted white suit jacket adorned with an oversized floral embellishment. He perfectly embodied the essence of a fairy-tale prince with a modern twist and a forward-thinking approach in his wardrobe choices.
