Rising designer prices are prompting Gen Z to repurpose vanity bags as clutches, while luxury brands transform these shapes into new high-end handbags
We all know them—and want them. Designer it bags are at the top of every fashion lover’s wish list, with iconic styles like Chanel’s 2.55 and the Prada Galleria achieving cult status and skyrocketing in both popularity and price over the years.
A recent report from The Business of Fashion charts the sharp rise in luxury goods prices from 2019, just before the pandemic, through to 2024. According to data sourced from HSBC, one of the world’s leading banking and financial organisations, the average price of personal luxury items in Europe has risen by an impressive 52% since 2019. This surge in prices has particularly impacted the market for coveted designer bags.
The Rising Cost of Designer It Bags
Leading the trend is a classic: Chanel’s 2.55 bag, which has soared from €5,800 to over €11,000 after a recent revamp—a staggering 91% increase. Close behind is the Prada Galleria bag in the brand’s signature Saffiano leather, climbing from €1,750 to €3,700, representing a remarkable 111% rise. In third place is Louis Vuitton’s Speedy 30, which has doubled in price from €800 to €1,600—a 100% increase.

While brands explain that rising prices are due to increased costs of raw materials and labour, a situation partially influenced by the pandemic’s impact on inflation, one thing is clear: the allure of these It Bags hasn’t faded. For younger generations, though, the accessibility and willingness to purchase luxury items have certainly diminished. Even consumers with higher spending power are becoming more discerning, prioritising value for money and choosing to invest in experiences like travel rather than luxury goods. Additionally, sustainable alternatives such as resale and rental platforms have gained traction, providing viable options for those seeking luxury without the hefty price tag.
Gen Z’s Ingenious Approach: Transforming Designer Vanity Bags into Must-Have Clutches
Yet, the dreams of Gen Z aren’t so different from those of previous generations. The excitement of acquiring a new designer bag still brings a satisfying adrenaline rush—though it now often requires a bit of ingenuity. Thanks to TikTok and other social media platforms, younger shoppers have become skilled at finding creative alternatives.
Viral videos demonstrate how, for a modest cost, they can purchase beauty products in-store or online and receive a complimentary designer vanity bag, enjoying the same luxury experience that brands promise, regardless of how much they spend. With just a few simple tweaks, these vanity bags can then be transformed into the season’s most sought-after clutches.
When Luxury Elevates the Vanity Bag into a Fashion Staple
In a fascinating twist within the fashion landscape, we are witnessing a reciprocal trend: while younger generations are transforming vanity bags from brands like Dior and Chanel into chic designer clutches, the luxury sector is now bidding farewell to the trend of small backpacks and tote bags and elevating the shapes and volumes of vanity bags instead.

Once just a basic accessory in a woman’s beauty arsenal, the vanity bag is now emerging as a statement piece that can be showcased at any time, day or night, without the need for modifications to transform it into a stylish minaudière. This evolution highlights how traditional luxury brands are drawing inspiration from the vanity bag’s appeal, reimagining it as a full-fledged handbag crafted from premium materials and adorned with exquisite finishes, all while commanding sky-high prices.
Why a New Kind of Clutch Is Taking Over
Vanity bags are revolutionising the way we carry our essentials, as demonstrated by iconic designs such as the Loro Piana Pouch Bag and Bottega Veneta’s latest Bang Bang style. These bags perfectly combine style and utility, evolving from their original purpose of holding cosmetics into fashionable handbags that integrate functionality with fashion.
Unlike oversized totes, vanity bags provide a compact solution for carrying essentials without the bulk. They are ideal for the on-the-go lifestyles of millennials and Gen Z, fitting effortlessly into any outing—whether it’s brunch, a night out, or a spontaneous shopping spree.
Available in a diverse range of styles, from vintage-inspired designs to modern minimalist aesthetics, there is a vanity bag to complement every outfit and occasion.
Their structured shape adds a touch of elegance to casual looks while enhancing more formal attire with ease. Moreover, the well-organised compartments and secure closures typically found in vanity bags make them not just stylish but also practical for carrying essentials such as phones, wallets, and make-up.

Complemented by the brand’s charms, Dior’s vanity bags exude timeless luxury, making them perfect for those who appreciate refined craftsmanship.
How to Style Your Designer Vanity Bag
Effortless Chic: For a laid-back vibe, pair a classic jacket with high-waisted jeans, a tucked-in top, and a basic vanity bag.
Elegant Evening: Accessorise a stylish jumpsuit or a little black dress with a sumptuous leather or embroidered vanity bag. The structured design imparts an air of refined elegance.
Street Style: Combine oversized streetwear with a boldly printed vanity bag. Think bulky shoes, a crop top, and loose-fitting trousers to create a one-of-a-kind ensemble that blends formal and casual pieces in a cool collision.
