In Paris, it is all about fashion. And Istituto Marangoni has honoured it with a rooftop Gala at the Centre Pompidou. Inspired by the prestigious Met Gala, the event should become a major annual appointment, emphasising the school’s interdisciplinary approach.

The theme of this very special first edition was ‘Make it Pop!’ to let everyone express and share their mutual passion for fashion, art and creativity.
Symrise has created an exclusive POP! fragrance specifically for this event, offering a glimpse of Istituto Marangoni’s new Fragrances & Cosmetics programmes. Let’s discover how this has inspired and sparked the imagination of the school’s students.

From neon explosions to dazzling sequins, let’s keep the Pop alive
With its first IM Gala, Istituto Marangoni Paris launched an unforgettable night of creativity and celebration conceived as a fashion performance around Pop.

The party gave the stage to the students’ creativity who interpreted Pop through their outfits. On the rooftop of the Centre Pompidou, with a breathtaking view over Paris, the Georges restaurant was transformed into a dance floor where colourful, maximalist looks revived the unbridled energy of Andy Warhol’s Factory.

It is a unique collage of diverse inspirations, combining elements from different eras such as Marie Antoinette meeting Elton John, and a modern interpretation of flappers’ undulating silhouettes from the Roaring 20s.

Despite the familiar feeling, it exudes a fresh and creative vibe, unbound by any rules. Andy Warhol’s words “Everything is beautiful. Pop is everything” came across as a visual slogan.
Don’t just call them outfits: an exercise in creativity without rules, with a special shout out to the best talents who perfectly embodied the Pop theme
Successfully opening Istituto Marangoni Paris’ new Gala event, Make it Pop! also provided an opportunity to rethink the dynamics of Pop culture transmission through students’ outfits.

What makes you look Pop? Here’s what our winners have to say
According to Andy Warhol, Pop is everything. But how can we define the Pop mood? And how did inspiration guide the students in creating their looks?
Democratic and provocative, glamorous and conceptual, Pop refers to a plurality of images and gestures rather than a single definition. The aim is to free the artistic act from theoretical constraints by making it “accessible” to everyone. It is not defined by a standardised genre or style but by individual gestures.
The question is always the same: what makes an outfit Pop? If you’re looking for an answer, we’ve got you covered as we asked the winners what was behind their unique looks for this one Gala night only.
Istituto Marangoni Paris Fashion Business student Isabella Maldonado's look for the IM Gala 2023, ‘Make it Pop!’
For Isabella Maldonado, a first-year Fashion Business student, it’s all about “Elton John and the entity of 70s pop. The shine of the sequins, the maximalist performance outfits, and what I like to call ‘a colourful elegance’. Elton John transformed both the fashion and music industries by not only breaking gender barriers but by exceeding the limits of style. This sense of limitless expression and euphoria is what I believe Pop to be”.
Istituto Marangoni Paris Fashion Styling & Creative Direction student Augusta Amurri's look for the IM Gala 2023, ‘Make it Pop!’
For Augusta Amurri, a third-year Fashion Styling & Creative Direction student, Pop is “Rococo, Marie Antoinette and bright colours. Colours were indeed the key, and to interpret Marie Antoinette’s iconic extravagance, I decided to play with femininity by creating a kind of undergarment dress. I created the bodice and then emphasised the role of shades.”

Third-year Fashion Styling & Creative Direction student Beatriz Hellington Soares De Carvalho also had a disruptive idea: “When I reflected about what Pop meant to me, I thought of Camp and Kitsch, something childish and fun,” she said. “I used a bunch of recycled teddy bears to create the skirt and added details in the make-up and accessories such as Mary-Jane shoes. I wanted to look like a childhood doll.”
